So I found myself reading some climbing blog recently (I’m not proud of that), and I came across this charming little thread where some too-cool-climber-blog-admin guy was flaming this poor kid for having Chris Sharma’s signature tattooed on his forearm…
Now, I think it goes without saying that having a tat like that is about as lame as playing spin the bottle with your grandma. But then, I couldn’t help but to ponder the psychology that might lead to such a tragic tattoo decision.
Let’s examine a few societal phenomena that might have played into this misguided body art:
- Pop culture tells us that tattoos are cool (sometimes they are, but generally speaking, not so much)
- The Boulder based climbing media would have us believe that climbing is cool (debatable to say the least).
- It’s fair to say that a large number of male climbers between the ages of 16 and 44 have a severe man-crush on Chris Sharma. It is worth noting that Sharma was named one of Sports Illustrated for Women’s “2002 Sexiest Men in Sports”; as true today as it was then (I think).
Given that, it seems that this poor kid is more a product of a shallow and sensationalistic environment, than just an idiot (I’m sticking up for you here, kid who shall remain nameless).
Anyway, the point(s) is/are:
- Chris Sharma is hella sexy
- Sharma actually is the best climber on the planet (I think); which serves as proof that beautiful people really are better in every way.
- Sharma climbs in Evolv shoes, and personally designed the PONTAS
